After character creation and shortly after entering the module, you may be prompted about taking extra languages. So instead of leaving you curious as to how the system works, I'll tell you. First of all, the extra languages are elven, dwarven, halfling, gnome, orc, goblin, sylvan, undercommon, abyssal, celestial, infernal, and draconic.
Now, to gain an extra language, you must have spent some ability points into your character's intelligence. You gain 1 extra language per your character's intelligence modifier starting after 1. So, you would gain your first extra language starting at 2 and your second at 3 and so on and so forth. In short, you get one language per your intelligence modifier... minus one.
There are also free languages! Free languages are given because of your character's race or class. Elves, dwarves, halflings, and gnomes automatically receive the elven, dwarven, halfling, and gnome language respectively. As for half-elves and half-orcs, they do not receive elven and orc automatically but they may optionally take them for free. As for class, monks receive every language at level 17. This is due to the Tongue of the Sun and Moon feat which allows a monk to speak with any living creature (This doesn't necessarily mean the monk actually knows the languages).
Any other language must be acquired through intelligence. Be aware that there are limitations as to who can learn what language. These limitations are dependant upon your character's race alone. Here's a list of the races and what extra languages they may take:

Submitting the background information in the character biography section here in the forums is just as acceptable as submitting it directly to the administration.
