they really can! I can't count how many times i've found purfectly good stuff people would just -throw away-. I was at work and I went outside and there were these nice brand new desk lamps next to the dumpster. I asked why they were thrown away and the Janitor said "They threw them away because they couldn't figure out how to tighten them and make them stay in a position" I was all "WTF!?" so I took some home and they work just fine.
